WebP vs PNG vs JPG: Choosing the Right Image Format

Almost every image on the web is one of three formats. Picking the wrong one costs you page speed or image quality — sometimes both.

PNG — lossless, transparency, big

PNG compresses without throwing away data, so it is the right choice for logos, icons, screenshots, charts and anything with hard edges or transparency. It is a poor choice for photographs: a 4000×3000 photo saved as PNG can easily be 20 MB.

JPG — lossy, universal, small

JPG throws away detail the eye is unlikely to notice and gets photographs down to a fraction of their size. It has no transparency support and every re-save degrades the image slightly. Use it for photographs and complex images where universal compatibility matters.

WebP — the modern default

WebP does both lossy and lossless, supports transparency and animation, and is typically 25–35% smaller than an equivalent JPG or PNG. Every current browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari 14+, Edge) supports it. The only real reason to avoid WebP is an old workflow that cannot handle the format.

Converting between them

You can convert in either direction with the WebP to PNG, PNG to JPG and JPG to WebP converters. A few rules of thumb:

  • Converting PNG → JPG loses transparency; the transparent areas usually become white.
  • Converting JPG → PNG does not restore quality; it only makes the file bigger.
  • Converting anything → WebP usually shrinks the file with no visible change.

One practical tip

Serve WebP with a JPG fallback if you support very old clients, and always set explicit width and height attributes on your images. Layout shift hurts Core Web Vitals far more than a few kilobytes of image weight.
